Legionella and humidification: the most frequently asked question answered
As soon as the conversation with a potential customer turns to humidification, sooner or later he will ask: "But what about legionella?" We provide clarity in this article.
As soon as the conversation with a potential customer turns to air humidification, sooner or later he will ask: "But what about legionella?" It is a valid question; legionella is notorious, and no one wants to take the risk. At the same time, it is a question that often stems from an outdated view of humidification technology. Time to provide clarity.
Why that question always comes up
Legionella bacteria thrive in stagnant, lukewarm water; think of neglected cooling towers, showerheads, or pipes that haven't been flushed for weeks. Because humidification by definition works with water and atomization, people are quick to draw the comparison. Logical, but it misses the mark once you look at how a professional system is actually constructed.

What makes a safe humidification system different
The risk of legionella does not lie in "releasing water into the air," but in the conditions the bacterium needs to grow: stagnant water, the right temperature, and contact between contaminated water and the air people breathe. A well-designed system systematically eliminates those conditions:
- Closed water circuit : the air never comes into contact with open water. Atomization only occurs at the very last moment, leaving no room for bacterial growth between the water and the air.
- Very pure process water : via reverse osmosis and UV disinfection, the water is thoroughly purified before use, so that simply no breeding ground remains.
- Periodic flushing of each zone : pipes and installation parts are automatically flushed, so that water never stands still long enough to pose a risk.
- Continuous monitoring : sensors monitor the UV lamp and water quality, among other things, and automatically trigger an alarm in the event of deviations or if the installation has been without power for too long.
These are not extra options, but the foundation upon which a serious humidification system is built.

BBHUM systems: safety as the starting point
At BBHUM, we design our humidification solutions precisely according to these principles. No open water contact with the air, high-quality water treatment, automatic flushing cycles, and continuous monitoring. Each of these measures makes Legionella growth structurally impossible, rather than merely checking for it incidentally. Our systems are configured so that hygiene safety is not a point of attention to be ticked off afterwards, but an integral part of the design itself.

The conversation that follows
When a customer asks about Legionella, it is actually a golden opportunity: it shows that they are seriously considering the purchase, and it offers us the chance to demonstrate exactly why our approach works. Instead of reassuring them with "don't worry," we can explain concretely what happens technically, and that is more convincing than any reassurance.
